The Compact Disc (a CD) was introduced in about 1982. A CD is an optical disc for storing digital data - originally digital audio. The CD is the standard physical medium of commercial audio recordings to the present day.
Standard CDs can hold up to 80 minutes of audio (700 MB of data). The original CD technology has changed over time, and numerous variations have been introduced. These include:
CD-ROM - data storage.
CD-R - for write-once audio and data storage.
CD-RW - Re-Writable media.
SACD - Super Audio CD.
VCD - Video Compact Discs
SVCD - Super Video Compact Discs.
Some others are: PhotoCD, PictureCD, CD-i, and Enhanced CD.
CD-ROMs and CD-Rs are widely used technologies in the computer industry, and have proven to be extremely successful. By 2007, : in 2004, worldwide sales of CD audio, CD-ROM, and CD-R reacapproximately 200 billion CDs had been sold worldwide.
